Residents along OMR discussed the impact of the residents welfare associations of various apartment complexes coming under the ambit of GST.
Organized by FOMRRA (Federation of OMR Residents Associations), the group met with a renowned chartered accountant to discuss the implications of the GST imposed on RWAs (resident welfare associations).
According to the rules, any association that levies a maintenance fee of Rs. 5000 of above or whose annual expenditure exceeds Rs. 20 lakh should be registered under GST.
The group has decided to make a representation that RWAs mirror the traditional joint family, and the individual apartments can be considered the members of the family. Since RWAs operate under a no-profit no-loss basis, they must be eligible to be exempt, residents say.
